In Memory
of Dorothy Rosenbaum Bowles
Born in Glade Springs,
Virginia on January 17, 1918 Dorothy learned practical
skills from her mother that would serve her well as she
reached out to others during her entire life. She was
married to David A. “Alex” Bowles for 45 years
and led an active life as the wife of a Presbyterian minister
who served as a pastor for the largest church in Venice,
Florida where she lived the majority of her life. She
exuded warmth that made everyone feel special and loved
while in her presence. An accomplished seamstress, Dorothy
created a baby blanket for each newborn infant of their
church. It was no secret that Dorothy enjoyed entertaining
and excelled in cooking, decorating, and capturing the
spirit of the holiday celebrations throughout the year.
She and Alex moved to Franklin in 1987 and they enjoyed
the beauty of the mountains until his death on May 3,
1993.
They were blessed with
two sons, David A. Bowles, Jr. who is married to Susan
and William Taliaferro “Tolly” Bowles who
married Roberta. Dorothy loved her six grandchildren David
A. Bowles III, Justin Bowles, Cody Bowles, of Sarasota,
Florida Kristin Avala of Franklin, Laura Bowles of Asheville,
and John Bowles of Charlotte, North Carolina and was actively
involved in their varied interests as she traveled to
soccer games, graduations, and track meets. She was thrilled
when she became the great grandmother of three. Family
and friends mourned her passing on April 6, 2006, however
she left a legacy of love that inspires her family.
